The Ukrainian Association for Jewish Studies has to record with regret that the well-known orientalist and hebraist, Professor Emeritus of the Chicago University Norman Golb (b. 1928) passed away on December 29, 2020.

The variety of his research areas ranged from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Jewish Arabic manuscripts to the Kievan letter of the 10th century (discovered by him in Cambridge, UK in the early 1960s) and medieval Normandy. In 2006, Professor Golb and his wife Ruth made their trip to Ukraine. There he gave a series of lectures at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (find one of them here) and the International Solomon University. Since 2012, Norman Golb also served as a member of the editorial board of the journal Judaica Ukrainica.

The funeral service will be live streamed on December 30, 2020 at 03:00 PM (Chicago) or 11:00 PM (Kyiv).

We express our deep sorrow and sadness to the professor's relatives, friends, and disciples.
Zichrono livracha!
