The Association for Jewish Studies condemns Russia’s unprovoked military assault on Ukraine. We are deeply concerned about the people of Ukraine, whose lives and hopes for democratic political sovereignty have been upended by this vicious assault.
Among the members of the AJS are scholars who have dedicated their careers to studying Jewish communities in Ukraine, Russia, and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, which together have produced an extraordinarily rich cultural legacy. The AJS stands against Russia's violent aggression and is furthermore appalled by President Putin’s misappropriation of Holocaust history by attempting to justify his attack on Ukrainian sovereignty as a war of de-Nazification.
